Mainly by two methods: Growth "rings" on scales, and/or ringlike structures found in otoliths (small bones of the inner ear), are examined and counted. The rings correspond to seasonal changes in the environment and can be compared to the annual rings of tree trunks. A series of fine rings are laid down in scales for each year of life in summer, the rings grow faster and have relatively wide separations; in winter, slower growth is indicated by narrow separations between rings. Each pair of rings indicates one year. Because scale rings are sometimes influenced by other factors, scientists often use otoliths, whose ringlike structures also indicate years of life.

They clearly state how the time can work for these contests. Also many of the questions will be FH related. In fact the very first contest question posted up last month was on the FH (the one no one new the answer to). Once again if one were to take the time to read contest rules they clearly state that while many of the questions will pertain to FH. Questions will also attempt to cover all ranges of aquatic life. Ranging from fresh-salt water be it a question about water chemistry it's self or ranging from bacteria, fish, snail, shrimp, plant life, ect ect ect. After all the purpose of these questions is to educate and push our members towards building their own knowledge (remember finding answers together!) As for curtain questions like the one you suggested. I am trying to stay a way from questions that are subject to speculation. Example- What fish were originally used to create the flowerhorn? If something like this was asked. There could be no correct answer for while many including myself believe that they have a good idea. It can not be proven. I hope I have shed some light on how these contest work and the intention behind them for anyone how did not know thank you. thumbs up
