This is how Mal breeder grade their ZZ flowerhorn (AAA,AA,A,B or C) while they are still at fry size. Usually most breeders will cull & partition their breed at the size of 1" to 1.5". Since they are such a young & small size, not much thing could be seen out of them except of their flowerline.

Firstly let us understands what does ZZ mean. ZZ = zenzu (mandarin) = pearls. So what is a ZZ pearls? As you can see the earliest of ZZ do not have any pearls dots on their body so how did they come about the name pearls? For your information, the pearls on the ZZ means the each dark flowerline found on the ZZ body which was surrounded by some metalic hue & glow which resemble a black pearl shine. You may want to get back to your ZZ flowerhorn now to know what I am saying.

Ok, so it is the flowerline that determine the grade of a ZZ.

Grade A - flowerline should be more than 75% to 100%.
Grade B - flowerline should be more than 50% to 75%.
Grade C - flowerline which are less than 50% or only a few dots.

From Grade A, we could gradually know if the ZZ is going to be a AA or AAA later by determining the growth traits of the fish with the written explanation.
1. Kok - the bigger the better.
2. Colors - the more solid & colorful the better.
3. Body - the stout & thicker the better.
4. Finnage & Tail - Balance & proportion.
5. Flowerline - the darker & more shiny pearls surround it the better.

Finally, hope this helps in your ZZ grading, selection and enjoyment of this wonderful fish!! its a beautiful thing

Illustration on the above explanation.

that was a good question. yes, you may do it...C>CC>>CCC but to Mal breeders, a C is a C because of its flowerline that predetermine its class/grade.

the initial qualification is to be qualified in the grade A category by having a 75% to 100% center flowers on the body. and with and additional double or triple flowers, of course they are the plus factors. finally the 1 to 5 points will still determine their final outcome...A,AA or AAA. but then again if we were to compare a single flower AAA with a double/triple flowers AAA, of course the double/triple will definitely be more desirable as they are rare & unique.

still a lesser than 50% to 0% is a grade C. if it does possess the 1 to 5, then you say it is a best grade C ZZ.

Note: ZZ as explained, is all about pearls which is the flowerlines. So if a ZZ got lesser flowerlines, it is to say it got lesser pearls, thus a lower grade it will be.

Here is an interesting old article of differenciating quality FH to add to this interesting thread:

How to Differentiate the Good Quality Flower LuoHan

Hello, welcome to the world of Flower LuoHan - The millennium fish. Since the Flower LuoHan had been introduced to market two years ago, it had gradually getting attention from the aquatic pet lovers. Today, Flower LuoHan has become the most popular ornamental fish in Asia, especially in Malaysia, which is the original country for the birth of Flower LuoHan.

Flower LuoHan, which also named Rajah Cichlasoma, is widely misunderstood by people about its real name. Many people called it Flower Horn, in fact that name is given by an aquatic trading company to its fish. However, due to lack of knowledge and unclear explanation given by the fish breeders and sellers, the name has wrongly been used for a long time.

Today's Malaysian market is flooding with a lot of cheap quality Flower LuoHan but selling at the high price. The cheap quality Flower LuoHan that we commonly see in the market is those unable to grow to at least 10" inches big, when it gets matured. The cheap quality Flower LuoHan also doesn't have a big, round and swelling head that deems auspicious in Chinese culture and belief. These are the only few common characteristics that we use to differentiate the cheap Flower LuoHan, there are still some areas that we can use to distinguish between the cheap and good quality Flower LuoHan.

For good or superior quality Flower LuoHan, its head will start to grow up and swell when it's 3" inches big. Some excellent babies may even grow faster, for example when it's 2" inches big, we can see the big, round and swelling shape on its head already. When gets mature, good Flower LuoHan can grows up to 12" inches in common, some may even bigger. Many fish sellers cheating that the new generation of FLower LuoHan is unable to grow to 12" or bigger. I hope the Flower LuoHan lovers and breeders can awake now and don't listen to this kind of lie.

To identify the quality of Flower LuoHan, colour is also very important. The body colour of a Flower LuoHan will decide the value of the fish, especially the pearl dots that grow in the whole body of Flower LuoHan, which look like the stars twinkling in the sky.

To many people or fish lovers, they still believe that certain types or species of Flower LuoHan are the good quality fish. This is a totally wrong thinking and misunderstanding in people mind. Since Flower LuoHan is the hybrid fish, there is no more species that we can use to identify the quality or beauty of the fish. In today's market, we can see million of names have been given to Flower LuoHan according to different fish breeders and sellers. No matter how good for the type of Flower LuoHan or wonderful name they given to their Flower LuoHan, They quality of the fish is still cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, be remembered that the name given for the Flower LuoHan or named species is not a guarantee for the quality of the fish in the market.

The only way to identify the good quality or bad quality of the fish is through the experience and knowledge gains along the time. Whatsover, I hope this information can help everyone to know more in-depth about Flower Luohan and be smarter in choosing the A quality Flower Luohan.

Happy surfing and bye bye~~

Another old article mentioning the onset of pearly ZZs:

Flower Horn first came into existence in Malaysia sometime during 1996, 1997. It is commonly believed that this fish is a descendant from a wild cichid known as "Amphilophus Trimaculatus". After some generations in Malaysia, the appearance of the fish changes slightly and look somewhat different from their wild ancestor. This maybe caused by the changes in food types, climate and water quality. Later some local breeders uses these tank-bred fishes and cross them with the "Giant Blood Parrot" and became what we call today the traditional Flower Horn. Initially, it was not well received but after a series of breading exercise the shape of the body improved to the people liking and was crowned "Flower Horn" because this sounded much like it's original Chinese name.

Although the early day Flower Horn has a nice body shape but the fish lack colors. Some breeders then slelctively crosses different lines of the home-grown decendant of the Amphilophus Trimaculatus and turn out much more colorful Flower Horn fishes. These then became more acceptable by the public and thus was the birth of the modern version of the Flower Horn which we today call them the "Pearl Flower Horn".
