6. Don't Have More than 1/4 Inch of Gravel. A Fish Bowl needs a layer of cultured gravel 1/4 of an inch thick, but an aquarium with an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel doesn't need any gravel. If you put gravel in your aquarium, keep it less than 1/4 of an inch thick, and stir it for a few seconds every day with your net to be sure the particles get swept up into your filter.

The beneficial bacteria layer when not using old school UG filters is located at the upper level or rather the surface of the substrate. This is because of more water movement passing over the top layer of the substrate. Below that the #s of beneficial bacteria gets lower as you go down.

Thick layers of substrate aren't really needed unless you want to keep live plants. Also, thick layers of substrate does create dead spots so that is why most recommend thin layers.

Sand can get compacted over time and should be stirred around gently but not with any frequency. Same goes to plain agate style gravel substrate that does not get compacted as well because you want to keep your benificial bacteria in balance.

Porous substrate such as crushed coral, lava rock, crushed brick, etc. allows more water to flow thru, so those types of gravel need less stirring + they have more surface area overall for a good bacteria colony to thrive.

Hope that helps...

I absolutely agree with Lucky. I gravel vacuum about once a week but I also move my gravel around the tank (when ever I have time) in order to stimulate my FHs. My FHs like to move the gravel into a pile at one end of the tank and I will move it to the other just so they have stuff to do when I'm at work daance
