I just got this Kamalau last weekend, the head is popping a little bit, any suggestions how to get the kok to grow to its fullest potential?      Edited by petah, Jun 17 2008, 03:18 PM.

Clear pictures would help. first we need to see your setup. Best things, you should do is set water temp at 86(strong air pump will needed), PH 7.2-7.8, feeding your fish 3 times a day. morning and noon could be bloodworms, and feed pellets at everning, do not feed at night. Remember feed your fish with small portion, do not over feed your fish because bad water quality will also effects head size. |

It's a standard 60 gallon tank with two aquaclear 70's, two sponge filters and an aquaball internal filter as well. The substrate is white, gray gravel and one ornamental tree stump with openings for small fish to swim in. I have like 3 plastic flowerhorn toys in there for him to play withand one aquascape plus heater, right now temp is about 86 degrees, just did a 20 percent water change today. Tank is clearing up as well. Yesterday I added a female green dragon (what the petshop called it) in with it and it looks like they might pair up since they aren't fighting. I have two small clay breeding plates in there as well. The ph is around 7.8, should I lower the ph with a buffer? He seems to eat like a pig but I don't overfeed him. Just a little at a time. I'm feeding him a mix of freeze dried bloodworms and alife flowerhorn pellets. I purchased some NLS Thera +A lg. fish formula, but he doesn't like that food, especially since it sinks to the bottom and he doesn't take to eating food off the gravel. I'll try to take some better pics to show you guys. I paid $120 for him from a reputable guy locally. The female I purchased from a local shop that sells flowerhorns as their specialty. |

I broke my digi cam a while back, plan on buying a new one soon. Our webcam stinks so I'll update when I can thanks for the comments tho, also just purchased a golden female that looks pregant so we'll see what happens |

More pics, borrowed a digi cam but pictures still not the greatest, just need to learn how to set it up. The Kamalau is about six inches or so, the female green dragon is about 2.5 inches and the golden based female is about 3.5 or so. I really like this kamalau but I'm tempted to trade it in at the LFS for a nice red zz with kok potential. What do you guys think? |

Right now I have him on Alife, NLS Thera +A, frozen beefheart and mealworms. Is that a good mix of feed to get his kok going?

What's the best way to bump him up? He is currently in a 60 gallon long glass tank with white gravel. I keep the water very clean as well. The temp is about 85-86 degrees and the ph is around 7.8. |

Thanks for the comments and the info, but I ended up selling him more than what I paid for! I was able to get a beautiful koky KGM from flowerhornonline. So I got him on Grand Sumo and beefheart and his kok is definitely growing! I'll send updates on him when I get a chance. |
