Picture on this link will help visualize ZZ traits: http://www.flowerhornrus.com/faqandinfos.htm. The Fish Talk section needs updating; latest version is flagged at forum's Beginners section.

1. Water kok = Soft kok.

2. Flowers (black markings) exist in other FH strain ( i.e. Kamfa). Conversely, there are flowerless ZZs.

these are some awesome questions..

keep them coming..

also.. thanks Mentat and petah for pointing out..

i will try to give some input when time is given..

Golden Monkey ALSO called KAMALAU

Kamalau is a Cantonese term which is the same as GM. In Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia, this term is commonly use among hobbyists

but to me the best way to learn is to be open minded, take in information, do some research,.. ASK!! and in time you will know whats what..

do not worry..for all of us are newbies as is..for with FH, it is ever so changing!! thumbs up

i moved the thread to the newbie corners so we all could learn its a beautiful thang

respectfully,
vanz

That statement was maybe true during FH origen time, but not anymore. Currently there are ZZs with hard koks, soft koks (more desired) and semi-hard (somewhere in between hard and soft) it's all good .

Semi- Water Head

Water Head

Short Body ZZ

Posted Image
Posted Image

Characteristics
Note: Flower Lo-Han = Kamfa & Pearl Lo-Han = ZZ

FOREHEAD/KOK:
The forehead/kok of the Kamfa rises higher than the ZZ.
Posted Image

FLOWER:
On the side of the forehead/kok, the ZZ has more conspicuous/easily seen black mark/flowers than the Kamfa.
Posted Image

MOUTH/LIPS:
The lips of the Kamfa is smooth and circular whereas the lower lips of the ZZ is sticking/protruding out and the upper lips is shorter.
Posted Image

EYES:
The eyes of the ZZ are usually outstanding/bulge out. The eyes of the Kamfa are hollow/sunken.
Posted Image

FINNAGE:
The dorsal fin and anal fin of the Kamfa would wrap around the caudal fin and they would look like one whole fin. The dorsal fin and anal fin of a ZZ would usually go upward and downward. The caudal fin of the ZZ is usually smaller also.
Posted Image

TAIL:
The bigger & older ZZ, it would have a droopy caudal tail. This condition would not occur to the Kamfa strain.
