how come my flowerhorm seem so stressed out everytime i do water change? i treat the water with prime and let it age for atleast 24 hours before doing water change in her tank, but she is always seem sooo stressed out every single time!---she stays on top of the tank and breathe patterns abit diffrent, she looks like she dying! then she is fine after a few minutes, but im wondering what am i missing here? am i doing something wrong?? she also losses her appetite for a few days after water change....is this normal? water is same ph, temp, as her tank; dechlorinated, age, aerated, etc so fraustrating....what is wrong?? thanks Edited by benito1188, Jul 23 2008, 10:50 AM.

* Water Condition * An important criteria in keeping these magnificent species is the pH level of the water that it lives in. pH level is the measurement of acidity or alkaline of the water. OUR pH recommendation is 6.0 - 7.6, Ammonia is 0, and Nitrate is 0. Like any other fish, sudden or drastic changes on the pH level can be detrimental to the flower horn fish. As precaution, it will be great to check the pH of the water periodically * Water Change * This is one of the Most Important FACTOR of Caring for your FlowerHorns? Just like US , who would like to live in a dirty, hazardous environment.. If we don't move out of that type of an environment. We will no longer have a future and that would be the same with your FlowerHorns. So yes regular water changes are an absolute must. The most popular routine is 20-33% weekly water change. We recommend that you check your water parameters every other week to ensure that there is no harmful fluctuations in your water. Adding Aquarium salt with Water Conditioners and Treatment are also Beneficial. hope this helps.. |

aquarium salt was probably the one main thing u were missing... but what kinda female is it?? some fish react differently to water changes... some may like the aged water and some may like the new water...

How often do you do water changed and how much? What's the size of you tank bro. benito1188 and how big is the fish right now.? Is she in the tank by herself? Lets see I would like to suggest doing water change once a week at about 30%..Do not feed after water change. Most time when temperature changed some fish react differently. Some swim around and some stay still..aquarium salt will help reduce the stress level of the fish. So if you haven't add any salt..please do so.

i used to do 1-2 50% water change a week, then i thought that might stressed her, so i changed it to 20-30%. i dont feed her for a couple of days after water change cause i know she wont eat at all. the fish is about 7-8 inches all by herself in 50ish gallon, no decor or what so ever, just sand. her water temp is about 82-84, abit unstable lately since its summer. and the aged water is about the same. i dont think a couple of degrees would hurt, or i may be wrong. im about to go to the fish store to get some salt, just waiting for the doors to open PS. this problem of mine didnt just occur recently, its always been like this everytime i do water change with her. ive had her for about 6 months now |

Those symptoms you describe are of a fish suffering from Cl or some kind of chemical hit. Do you have Cl and/or Ammonia test kit available? Couple possibilities here (imagine you are using tapwater at your locality): - Prime is outdated and not doing what it is supposed to. Would need to test treated water for Cl to find out or get another conditioner and compare (if Prime get bottle from another batch number). - Water company is overdosing with chloramines. Need to double or triple dose Prime or any conditioner you use as required (Cl test kit would help to narrow done required dose). - If Cl level ok after adding conditioner; check Ammonia levels in tapwater (mine is 50 ppm. right out of tap). A large waterchange like you are doing (30-50%) will be hard for fish to deal with, specially if your pH is higher than 7.0 (ammonia becomes more toxic at higher pH). Will need to do smaller frequent changes or use conditioner that neutrilizes ammonia too (i.e. Aqua Vitro "Alpha" or similar). Be aware that what is stressing your fish could also wipe out your bio-filter and create additional water quality problems. If there is no Cl and Ammonia present in your treated water and she still stresses out; try smaller 10% changes 2x a week if possible. Edited by Mentat, Jul 25 2008, 04:18 AM.
