Ok here is a what to do thread for Hurricanes for a fish keeper. Please feel free to add to this list. Generators... well if you have them you are lucky! They are the best for power outages. If not and your power goes out due to a hurricane: Stock up on battery operated pumps (+++ batteries). Most of the pumps can keep running for 48 hours. Remember for larger tanks you want more then one. Place at opposite ends of the tank. There are tablets that can release oxygen, though the water remains stagnant. With the pumps water is still circulating and creating surface agitation from the bubbles, which is better then stagnant water. I see no vad reason for using both... just make sure you have the pumps with airstone if left with only one choice. Emergency tactics... this is when you don't have the supplies above: With a cordless drill you can attach a paint stirrer bit on the drill. You can then use that to stir up the water to bring in oxygen. Laborious, but it works. Prevention: Stop feeding the fish. Do a water change... or test you water to make sure you are in the clear. I already stopped feeding my fish and after this I am going to do some small water changes! *If you have a planted tank it is best to trim back the plants or to move the plants to another tank without fish. If you don't have many plants it is ok, Also, if the tap is still running you can do waterchanges. Just have to keep at it. Another great prevention is to store water. I am sure I missed some here, for I am in a whirlwind of action now... I wish all the best for folks keeping fish in the hurricanes path. |
